My name is Zamaria Bethea, and I am excited to introduce myself and share the work I have been doing to raise awareness about Maryland’s Extreme Risk Protective Orders (ERPOs). I’ve just completed my Bachelor’s degree at Bowie State University, studying Strategic Communications with a concentration in Public Relations. I’m continuing my education at the University of Maryland, where I am studying Public Administration, with the goal of working in the nonprofit sector.
Through my work with the Marylanders to Prevent Gun Violence (MPGV) ERPO Collaboration and Support Initiative, I focus on strengthening ERPO implementation across the state. This initiative fosters collaboration among regional and local liaison sites in Frederick, Washington, and Prince George’s Counties, as well as Baltimore City. By coordinating with these sites, we support ERPO training, public awareness, and resources that ensure communities know how and when to use this important tool.
An ERPO is a civil court order that allows law enforcement, family members, and certain others to petition the courts to temporarily remove firearms from individuals who may be at significant risk of harming themselves or others. ERPOs are an important tool for preventing violence, yet many people do not know how they work. That is why this initiative focuses on expanding awareness through training, public education campaigns, and outreach materials.
We are also developing best practices and supporting local partners so that ERPOs are applied consistently and effectively across jurisdictions. Through proactive crisis intervention strategies and strong partnerships, we are making Maryland’s ERPO process more effective and accessible statewide.
This work is deeply important to me because it combines education, safety, and community engagement. I look forward to sharing more updates and resources with you as we continue building safer and healthier communities together.
Thank you for taking the time to get to know me and this initiative!
