Maryland Gun Violence Prevention State Policy Roadmap
Marylanders to Prevent Gun Violence is proud to co-author the Policies to Reduce Gun Violence in Maryland in partnership with the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions.
This new report outlines practical, evidence-based strategies that Maryland policymakers can take to reduce firearm deaths and strengthen community safety.
Gun violence remains a serious public health issue in our state. In 2024, 671 Marylanders lost their lives to firearm-related injuries. Approximately 55% of those deaths were homicides and 44% were suicides — underscoring the need for comprehensive prevention strategies that address multiple forms of violence.
The roadmap organizes its recommendations into seven key areas:
- Strengthening the firearm purchaser licensing process
- Improving the handgun roster review process
- Refining safe storage requirements
- Strengthening implementation of Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs)
- Enhancing domestic violence firearm protections
- Investing in Maryland’s gun violence prevention infrastructure
- Improving state oversight of federally licensed firearm dealers
Together, these strategies provide a clear and actionable framework for reducing gun violence in Maryland.
